2023 California Requirements for Indoor Lighting
Background
C.E.C. (California Energy Commission) Code: The most recent code is the 2022 Code. It is referred to as the 2022 Building Energy Efficiency Standards. Indoor Lighting Requirements are quite simple and are listed in the “Mandatory Measures Sheets” which typically become part of the last few sheets of your Title 24 Compliance Report for Residential Projects. Non-Residential Requirements are quite different and apply to all new Commercial/Industrial construction and improvements. Multi-family structures actually fall into both categories, which we will explain.
Contrary to comments made by many contractors that the Energy Code was not around until the recent years, it was first adopted in 1976 by the CEC. Now we receive revisions every two years, much like all other codes such as the Building Code or the Mechanical Code.
We are going to address issues by asking questions, because we all have questions; even the professionals.
Why is my building inspector asking me to get a third party inspector and who is qualified to do this?
- The electrical inspector is the person that checks your project for the Electrical Code; they then cannot release your job until an inspector licensed by an approved State Agency can verify that you installed everything as per your lighting plan AND your NRCC (Non-residential Compliance Report). This person is called an ATT (Acceptance Lighting Technician). The Technician must be working under a licensed ATT Employer.
My Electrical Inspector already signed me off on the Electrical portion of my project I just need you to sign off on it.
- Your inspector has signed off only on the Electrical code but not th e Energy Code.
