The 2022 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for California
Initiated January 1, 2023 and are applicable to all newly constructed buildings, additions and alterations to existing buildings (California Code of Regulations –Title 24, Part 6)
Building Energy Efficiency Standards are specifically geared toward reducing wasteful, expensive, inefficient or unnecessary use of energy. These standards improve the outdoor and indoor environmental quality.
Target Savings resulting from the 2022 code will be to progress toward 100% clean electricity and carbon neutrality by midcentury. Once the solar electrical requirements are factored in, California’s Title 24 Compliance efforts will be responsible for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 700,000 metric tons over the three year code period. This is the same improvement as if we took off 115,000 fossil fuel vehicles off the road!
Title 24 Lighting Compliance and Acceptance practices for our State will create an additional 30% reduction in energy due to efficient lighting upgrades.
Residential Projects: Heat Pumps are the latest targets from the energy commission. Builders are motivated to use these sources for heating/air conditioning and water heating rather than gas powered units.

New to the 2022 Standards are:
- Homes required to be electric ready with dedicated 240V outlets and space for water heaters so that electric appliances can eventually replace gas units.
- Homes will be required to provide better indoor air quality by increasing kitchen ventilation over cooktops.
- Provides exceptions for solar panel requirements on small Residential projects so that if model shows less than 180Kw requirements, they will be exempt for solar panels
- Nonresidential standards update sets up combined PV and battery standards for certain businesses. System size requirements and solar panel usage are maximized to reduce electrical demand when the grid must use gas-powered plants.
- Nonresidential buildings now have new standards for greenhouses, primarily for cannabis growing.
- Nonresidential buildings now have improved efficiency standards for envelope and internal systems along with grid integration equipment, like demand response controls for improved grid stabiliy.
