Let’s face it, the ever-changing Energy Requirements in California are Impossible to Follow!
Let's see if we can help to understand the basics:
Let's see if we can help to understand the basics:
Here are some facts that might help!
What type of inspector do need for a Title 24 Lighting Acceptance Test? What forms do I need to submit? Is my job exempt? What is Daylight Harvesting? When is Daylight Harvesting required? How do I set up Daylight Harvesting? How do I program my Photo Sensor for Daylight Harvesting? Does every room need dimmer switches? |
Does every room need occupancy/vacancy sensors? When do I need to install a timer or astronomical clock? How do I program an Astronomical Clock? Where do I need to place my switches/lighting controls? How do I program my dimmer switch? What are my outdoor lighting requirements? Is my parking lot project included in the inspection requirements? What if my plans are incorrect –can I still pass if I install per plan? |
What type of inspector do I need to get my Lighting Acceptance Clearances?
You will need an Acceptance Test Technician (ATT) that is certified by an Acceptance Test Technician Certification Provider (ATTCP) to perform nonresidential acceptance testing for Lighting Controls (Title 24, Part 6, Section 130.4) or Mechanical Systems (Title 24, Part 6, Section 120.5). The training includes both hands-on experience and theoretical training to certify competency in the technologies and skills required to properly execute an acceptance test. Training and recertification is mandatory when there are modifications or updates to the code.

What forms do I need to submit?
There are two types of Lighting Acceptance Documents you may be required to provide. The first is the Indoor Lighting Acceptance Document and the second is the Outdoor Lighting Acceptance document.
Outdoor Lighting Forms:
NRCA-LTO-02-A -This applies to all outdoor lighting in commercial buildings and it also includes exterior lighting for apartment/condominium buildings, exterior patios, common open air areas and exterior parking lots.
Indoor Lighting Forms:
NRCA-LTI-02-A -This applies to all Shut-off Lighting Controls in your project.
NRCA-LTI-03-A -This applies to Automatic Daylight Controls in your project. This one is tricky, many times, the Lighting Designer as well as the Building Plan Checkers miss this one and just because your plans don't show it, does not mean that you will not need it to pass your inspection. Familiarize yourself with the basic requirements on this.
NRCA-LTI-04-A -This applies to projects over 10,000 s.f. The general description for this is that the Lighting Control System would need to be connected to the internet in order for the local utility to be able to reduce energy use at peak hours.
NRCA-LTI-05-A -This applies to Institutional Tuning of your Lighting Controls and is mainly used by large corporations. It is used when the Lighting requirements are not compliant and the designer needs to find a way to reduce the rated wattage of the total lighting system. The lights will be programmed to operate at less than their rated power potential in order to meet the requirements of the design.
You will know what reports are required by reading your Title 24 Compliance Report in your approved set of plans. Bear in mind that sometimes the Title 24 Compliance Reports are also incorrect and either call out for forms not required or do not call out for the forms that are required, so familiarize yourself with the code.
